With all the heated controversy over a federal judge’s decision challenging the National Day of Prayer
With NDP leader Shirley Dobson proposing “Battle-minded Prayer”
Let us propose a new national (or international) holiday–or teaching moment–that calls attention to the fact that millions of people on the planet do not pray or choose to participate in prayers pushed upon them by political leaders or religious believers.
A National Day Without Prayer could open many minds and communities to the opportunities of cooperative projects beyond prayer and faith. No one would be forced or even urged Not to Pray, yet the day could be useful for educating more people about the non-theistic citizens who do not call upon a deity and at least suggest they think about the ways in which prayer practices divide rather than unify the country.
May 7 might be one suggested annual date.
